Fic: Also Ran
Thanks to aaronlisa  for organizing this comm and for letting me reschedule my posting date.

Title: Also Ran
Author: Lirazel (penny_lane_42 )
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Cordy, Spike, one-sided Cordy/Angel and Spike/Buffy
Time: Missing scene from "You're Welcome," Angel Season 5
A/N: Realistically, there probably wouldn’t have been time for these two to have this conversation. But I couldn’t resist the idea of my two favorite characters interacting a little more, especially when I see more similarities between them every time I think about them. So let’s squeeze this scene into “You’re Welcome” in between Angel defeating Lindsey and the gang kicking out Eve/deciding to go out for drinks.
Summary: The not-so-original vampire-with-a-soul and the cheerleader-turned-vision girl flirt, snark, and discover they have a few things in common.

Ooh, I really enjoyed that! I was chuckling at all the quips but then I got a bit teary-eyed by the end. Love the comparisons you drew between them. They both see true and aren't afraid to tell you what they're thinking. Too bad they couldn't have shared more screen time.

I was chuckling at all the quips but then I got a bit teary-eyed by the end. I'm so glad! I wanted to encompass it all with them; I'm glad it worked for you.

They both see true and aren't afraid to tell you what they're thinking. Too bad they couldn't have shared more screen time. Exactly. Thanks so much for your kindness in reviewing!

A fabulous, tender interlude between two supposedly hard-boiled characters.

He shakes his head slowly, an emotion she can only describe as wonder in his eyes. “You’re quite a woman, you know that?” She’s ready to laugh off his comment, but he ducks his head so that she has to meet his eyes. “I mean it. You could never be second place. Not ever.”

More tears, stinging this time, but she blinks them away and smiles. “Yeah. You neither.”

A surprise and a delight!

A fabulous, tender interlude between two supposedly hard-boiled characters. That's so great, the way you phrased it. They're both very much hard-boiled on the surface, but there's so much more going on with both of them.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic!

This was glorious. Thoughtful, and deep, and then so emotional at the end. Really beautiful.

Brava! This was so good. I just wish AtS S.5 writers were half this insightful. You made me make peace with Cordy's character (she had me in a shock since the pregnancy arc), and you spotted and discussed a point that I had not seen before.
Thank you, excellent little moment.

Thank you so much!

I just wish AtS S.5 writers were half this insightful. Wow! Thanks!

You made me make peace with Cordy's character (she had me in a shock since the pregnancy arc) Oh, I know. She was "my" character on AtS, and I never felt right about the way they just cast her aside as though she hadn't been there from the beginning, in many ways the heart of the show.

Thank you so much, and you're welcome!

Oh, nice. I have to thank Sue, who recommended this over at the Soulful Spice Society fic recs forum for pointing me this way; I haven't even been reading BtVS/AtS fic from my friends list much lately, and this just blew me away. Lovely moment from twocharacters with more in common than one might think.

Julia, thanks everso for the great story!

Wow. Terrific story. Interesting comparisons, paradoxal parallels, great character voices.

Thank you so much! I'm so pleased the character voices worked for you!

I've always loved Cordy and Spike interaction, usually for the snark, but your piece of fiction transceded that. Drawing parallels is one thing; this was more. I mean, others have quoted lots of bits, and all those were great, but I like how they can you go from one place to another, and the moment when Spike got serious and just said, "Yeah?", well... I felt vulnerable. That was a nice moment.

I also like how they express their love to the person of their choice.

But above all, I like how he kisses her hand, because it's so rare we see any William in Spike, I can totally see him more human and receptive to others than he has been in a long time, and doing this old-fashioned, gentleman thing because he decided he rather like that girl who's about to die.

All in all, this was a lovely fic. Got nothing, but really -nothing- against it. n__n

In my head, I've dubbed them the King and Queen of Snark, and I thought this would probably have a lot more in it than it actually ended up having. I'm glad the more-than-snark worked for you.

Thank you so, so much for your kind words. I'm so pleased you liked it, especially the hand-kissing bit, because I wasn't sure if it was too early in their interaction to let him be that vulnerable with her, to show her William. But you've set my mind at east about that.

Again, thanks so much!

This was a lovely scene. Great job with these characters. The tone and ending fit wonderfully with that of "You're Welcome", one of my favorite Angel episodes.

Wonderful piece. I loved it and if felt very much in character and your voices were wonderful. I loved Cordy but I hated the Jasmine storyline and what ME did with her character.
